The Spanish Society of Journalists (SEP) and the Faculty of Communication of the University of Seville are organising the 27th International Congress of the SEP on 27 and 28 May 2021 in virtual format due to the exceptional situation we are experiencing at a global level as a result of the COVID-19. Under the title "Digital transformation. Challenges and expectations for journalism", this edition establishes the necessary connection between the academic, business and professional worlds around the general theme of the activity and between the agents involved. It aims to advance the importance of the digital transformation as a strategy of the media and journalism companies, therefore, the term digital is assumed not as an end in itself, but as a central characteristic of the journalism industries.27th International Congress of the SEP on 27 and 28 May 2021"Digital transformation. Challenges and expectations for journalism"establishes the necessary connection between the academic, business and professionalIt aims to advance the importance of the digital transformation as a strategy of the media and journalism companies

Digitization in journalism began early and poorly understood more than 25 years ago. We could say that it predates the arrival of the Internet and began with the use of primitive computers in 1952. Later, in the 1990s, the media adapted to the web. Since the end of the last century, the technological revolution has advanced vertiginously, dominating the rules of the game in the digital sphere. Despite these media changes, it is possible that several of them have been adapted without a true awareness of the digital ecosystem. In the middle of the 20th century they are facing a different process to achieve the digital maturity of their company. Therefore, the digital transformation, according to Kane (2017), must be understood as the growth process of a journalistic company not only in terms of cutting-edge technology, but also, taking into account the cultural, organisational, knowledge and technological aspects. Therefore, it implies a change of mentality and attitude to innovate with technology as a strategic differentiator. In this way, digital maturity will be reached and it will be possible to face the competitive environment considering innovation as a change engine.

The 27th International Congress of the SEP aims to promote the critical study from a retrospective, contemporary and prospective viewpoint of the processes of digital transformation of the media and their impact on the essence and values of the profession of journalism and journalistic practice, which should think, above all, of the audience as the centre of its strategy. To this end, this meeting aims to examine the adaptation of the journalistic profession to the new challenges; the innovation of new business models, audiences and distribution strategies, content production and new narratives and, teaching and research in post-Covid-19 journalism. Five thematic areas in which this scientific forum is organized.

We are aware that a good virtual format will never replace the personal interactions that we always enjoy at every scientific meeting, but this will not be an obstacle. This SEP Congress offers a reference meeting at a national and international level and is open to academic, professional and business participation through conferences, round tables and communication to bring together visions and deepen the importance of digital maturity in journalism companies for the continuous improvement of the journalism profession.
